Class case study- music video

What are the conventions of music videos?
  • Standard length; 3-4 minutes
  • Visuals usually reflects the lyrics but sometimes music videos are abstract/conceptual
  • Focus on the artist as a star, e.g. low angle= high stars, close ups=repeated, costume might be aspirational - themed costumes. Costumes varies according to genres.
  • Star quality-"authorage"- the star's distinctive visual style.
  • Editing; fast cutting rate, many shots/scenes, cutting rhythm that's in sync with beat and lyric, lip sync- performance; dancing, playing instruments depending on genre.
  • Studio setting might be present
Beyoncé-'Single Ladies'
  • Camera pans
  • Beyoncé framed in centre- screen time
  • Fades/Lighting acts as an transition
  • Cutting rate various, slow shots. speeds up
  • Wide shots
  • Themed costumes- Star has a different costumes makes her authorage, glove connotes ring
  • Lip syncing and dancing

  • Themed-60s; big hair, costumes, boots, sets, bikes

  • Special effects, SFX either a green screen or projection- graphic 60's images

  • "Star quality"; Ariana Grande-innocent persona, ditsy, young looking image, girly  Iggy- more feisty, mature, tougher ; contrasting personalities but both has a male gaze. Metaphorical male gaze being targeted. Both sexualised.
